Stari Grad is a small town
on the northern side of the island of Hvar in Dalmatia, Croatia.
Stari Grad (The Old Town) is located at the end of a four
nautical mile-long bay on the northern side of the island
of Hvar. The fields used to provide sustenance and the bay
provided protection. Today, both the fields and the bay add
an attractive quality to the old heart of the island, in the
which the modern vacation sights have become interwined with
the antiquities of the town of the island. The true beauty
of Stari Grad is its Renaissance and Baroque architecture
a legacy of Venetian occupation in the 16th and 17th centuries
and the fragrant lavender and rosemary-smothered hills that
border the town, making it an antidote for stressed-out urbanites
in search of lovely surroundings and safe beaches. The town
Stari Grad is dating back to 385 BC when the Greek settlers
from Pharos populated the island Hvar. Stari Grad is the second
largest town on the Island of Hvar and has some wonderful
old cobbled streets where an array of restaurants, café bars
and boutique shops can be found.
