About Island of Hvar

The Island of Hvar is the fourth largest Adriatic Island. 68 km long and maximum 10,5 km wide this island counts 11200 inhabitants. With average of approximately 2750 sun shine hours per year this island is among the most sun tenacious travel destinations in the Adriatic.

The climate on Hvar is characterized by warm and dry summers and mild winters. Rich with pine tree forests and Mediterranean plants such as lavender and rosemary, fresh with summer winds, the Hvar Island is even in the hottest summer days a spot with fresh air and pleasant nights. The island of Hvar is ideal for a wide range of outdoor activities, such as cycling, hiking, sailing and scuba diving.

Hvar is a perfect place for residents who enjoy peaceful living and a lot of rest. Both history and nature have moulded the region through striking artistic achievement and detailed accounts of that creativity . The seven century-old walls, with fortifications towering above them, keep watch over the city of Hvar. There is also a seductive smell of lavander fields that also reflect a purple brillance to the local residents. The grapes of Hvar bask in the sun's rays each season so that they can later be pressed into wine.

This 68-kilometre long island lies a two-hour ferry ride from the mainland port of Split. Very popular with the yachting crowd, it’s known for its lavender fields, vineyards and old Venetian-style stone buildings.

Hvar is the longest of the Croatian islands and noted for its lush vegetation, quaint towns and fertile vineyards.
A particularly rich cultural and monumental heritage complements Hvar's natural and unique beauty. Often called the Lavender Island, the name refers to the aromatic, purple plant that grows in abundance on the island's stony slopes. In addition to the main town with the same name as the island, there is Stari Grad. Founded in 385 B.C. by Greek colonists, it was the island's capital until the 14th-century.

In the Middle Ages, the new capital Hvar achieved renown and power as an important port of the Venetian marine empire. Under Venetian rule, Hvar grew rich exporting wine, figs and fish. Despite social and political changes through the centuries, the island has retained its fame as a great center of Croatian literature, architecture, sculpture, painting and music, surpassed only by Dubrovnik.

Today, Hvar Town is one of Croatia's most popular resorts, reputed to receive more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the country.
